Violence by Shiv Sena party in India spread to other cities in Maharashtra
Jul. 9, 2006
Violence by Shiv Sena party activists that began in Mumbai, India, on July 9 spread to other cities in Maharashtra state as news of the desecration of a bust of the late wife of the party's founder spread. Acts of arson were reported in Mumbai's suburbs, while roads were blocked and shops stoned in Pune, Nashik, Aurangabad, Nanded and Chandrapur. Indian police fired tear gas on several occasions to restore order. Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has said the situation is under control, but Shiv Sena activists have vowed strong actions if the bust's vandals are not apprehended within 24 hours.
Activists from India's Shiv Sena party set buses ablaze and blocked roads in Mumbai and other towns in Maharashtra state July 9 after party members found a bust of the late wife of party founder Bal Thackeray vandalized in a central Mumbai park. Clashes erupted between the activists and members of Mumbai's minority community, prompting the police to intervene. Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said he would call in the government's Rapid Reaction Force if the situation required.
