Learning with Laptops, Improve Life

Can a lime-green, wind-up machine improve education opportunities for the world's poorest kids?

Nicholas Negroponte and his team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab think so. They have created a laptop computer that runs on electricity kids create themselves just by turning a bright yellow hand crank.

The machines will sell for just $100 each. The average price of a laptop in the U.S. in October 2005 was more than $1,000! The low price will make the machines available to millions of kids around the world who would otherwise never have a computer.
