Farewell to an Award-Winning Photographer

America remembers Joe Rosenthal, who captured one of the most famous images of World War II

It was mid-morning on February 23, 1945 when a group of Marines raised an American flag at the top of a Japanese island. U.S. troops had just captured the island, called Iwo Jima, from the Japanese during World War II.

Later that day, a photographer named Joe Rosenthal climbed up Mount Suribachi.
