James Ellroy wrote The Black Dahlia, his furious novel about the unsolved killing of 1940s Hollywood starlet Elizabeth "Betty" Short, in 1987, having waited half his career to get it on the page.

Unmistakably personal, this was the work of a man whose own mother was murdered (in 1958) and the culprit never caught: bitter, haunted, lacerating.
