EU Seeks More Transparent Air Fares
Jul. 11, 2007

Air fares advertised in the European Union must show all taxes, fees and surcharges so passengers know immediately how much they will pay, according to new rules approved Wednesday by the European Parliament. Previously, airlines often have advertised only the fares, adding various fees — such as fuel charges or airport taxes — at the time of purchase, substantially raising the ticket price. This has been the case especially with Internet bookings, where taxes often are added as a last step before the ticket purchase. Airport or onboard security costs — such as using air marshals on the plane — must also be shown separately on the ticket "or otherwise indicated to the passenger," European Parliament said. The measure still needs formal endorsement from EU governments.
