Dow continues run toward 14,000

Stocks gained ground near midday Monday, despite higher oil prices, as investors awaited earnings figures and inflation reports. The Dow Jones industrial average (up 62.27 to 13,969.52) added 0.5 percent after ending the previous session above 13,900 for the first time ever. By midday it was within 25 points of 14,000. The tech heavy Nasdaq composite index (up 3.37 to 2,710.37) and the broader Standard & Poor's 500 index (up 2.40 to 1,554.90) rose more than 0.1 percent.
