Interstate Highway System Turns 50
Media Release
Jun. 29, 2006

Fifty years ago this month, President Dwight D. Eisenhower set in motion a project which would forever change the way Americans live--the construction of the federal interstate highway system. Now 47,000 miles in length, the system made it possible for families to travel long distances quickly and safely. The U.S. economy also benefited from the improvements because of speedier shipping of goods between the states.

Eisenhower was more aware than most Americans of the need for such a system of highways. He was a young Army colonel in 1919 when he crossed the United States in a convoy of military vehicles. The goal of the expedition was to see how quickly troops could be moved in the event of war.

The highway hasz lasted for a long time working the way that it has. THat is a pretty long time though, with barely any cracks or pot wholes.
