Starry-Eyed Thousands Turn Out for Season 6 Tryouts

A woman in curlers, a man in a banana suit and girls on roller-skates: They were just a few of the thousands of hopefuls who flocked to the Rose Bowl during the wee hours this morning with dreams of becoming America's next Idol. Today marks the first round of auditions for the sixth season of Fox's powerhouse singing competition, "American Idol." Participants who get the nod from producers this round will sing again next month.

Then, the heat turns up for those who make it to the third audition, where "Idol" judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul will weigh in on the talented (and the talentless). We all hope to find someone to match the tallents of Taylor. He was an icon because of his ''golden main'', or gray hair at at about age 29.

Curled up in a yellow fleece, Laura sat pressed up against a metal fence, wishing she were anywhere else. "Coffee. I need coffee," she whimpers, clinging to the bars that cage her. "This is exactly why I didn''t want to do this. All the hoopla," she says, raising an eyebrow in her husband's direction.
