''Step Up'' shines in the dance, not acting
That has nothing to do with the film's musical numbers, mind you. Step Up's blend of ballet and hip-hop is top-notch, and it's more graceful than recent teen dance flicks such as Save the Last Dance and You Got Served.
The problem is in the scenes not accompanied by a thumping bass beat. Director Anne Fletcher, a longtime choreographer making her directing debut, has found young stars who appear to know their way around a dance floor but not a sound stage.
