Disagreement between union and bankrupt auto parts maker raises the possibility of strikes
Media Release
Aug. 11, 2006

The United Auto Workers said on Friday negotiations with bankrupt auto parts maker Delphi have been "at best disappointing," raising the possibility of potentially crippling strikes.

On Friday, a bankruptcy court judge adjourned until next week a contentious court hearing on proposed wage and benefit cuts to allow for continued settlement talks with its unions, former parent General Motors (Charts) and creditors.

However, the UAW threw cold water on the prospects for a quick settlement, saying the union and GM had made "significant efforts to resolve the issues," while Delphi has not wavered from proposals offered last November.

Delphi, its unions and GM have been in talks for months to try to reach agreement over Delphi's proposed wage and benefit cuts for U.S. hourly workers. Absent an agreement, Delphi wants authority to impose those cuts, which the unions have vowed would trigger strikes.

Such strikes could quickly hamper production at GM, potentially costing it billions of dollars while it is deep into its own restructuring plans.

The court hearing was suspended in June after Delphi and the others announced a deal to offer early retirements and buyouts designed to trim its U.S. blue-collar work force, but talks have not been fruitful since then, the UAW said.
