As the Illinois State Fair heads toward its finale Sunday, and the last funnel cakes of 2006 are snapped up, fair organizers are optimistic attendance will be the best it's been in years.

Officials reported that in the first week of the 10-day fair, about 447,000 people visited, which is an increase of 35,000 over the same period in 2005. Rain, excessive heat and a short-notice cancellation of a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert all hurt attendance last year, Herbert said.

"This year we have been very fortunate," she said, mentioning steady concert attendance and mild temperatures.
