Saddam coming back? Baath representative lays down condition for talk as US diplomat calls America arrogant and stupid
In a bizarre turn around of events some things interesting happened. In an interview with Al-Jazeera television aired late Saturday, Alberto Fernandez, director of public diplomacy in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs at the State Department provided an unusually candid assessment of America's war in Iraq. He said the United States had shown ''arrogance'' and "stupidity" in Iraq but was now ready to talk with any group except Al-Qaida in Iraq to facilitate national reconciliation.
At the same time the outlawed Baath Party told the Al-Jazeera network that they are ready to talk to UN on the following conditions. They want return to service of Saddam's armed forces, the annulment of every law adopted since Saddam's ouster, the recognition of insurgent groups as the sole representatives of the Iraqi people and a timetable for a gradual, unconditional withdrawal of U.S. and other foreign troops in Iraq.
the news made international think tanks blink several times. Saddam is well knows as the ultimate survivor. Is he or his Baath party on its way to come back to power again?
American have understood one thing, Al-Quaida is the real enemy. The Iraqi Government is composed of less than capable people and some of them are Iraqi expatriates that have little knowledge on Iraq.
However, President Bush has made his points very clear – zero tolerance with terrorism. What happens if Baath party agrees to non-violence and a ‘jihad’ against Al-Quida? The international politics is complex.
A bigger question however loom in the horizon. What happens if Baath really comes back. Further more what happens if Baath faces stubborn Al-Quaida and is unable to oust them from Iraq?
