How Did George Washington Really Die?
His death could have been caused from the theory that Washington was prescribed incorrect treatments by his doctors, or that his disease was so fatal that he would have perished, even with the best medical help history has to provide. What really happened?
There are many speculative stories about what really killed George Washington. His death could have possibly been caused from the fact Washington was prescribed completely incorrect treatments by his doctors, or that his disease was so fatal that it would have killed him, even with the best medical help history has to provide. The truth is that many people are still pondering Washington’s death.
George Washington’s symptoms might seem pretty common, sore throat and hoarseness. Washington had been out riding his hoarse when suddenly the whether turned for the worse. It was blisteringly cold and there was rain, accompanied with sleet and hail. Washington arrived at his house cold and wet, and without changing, sat down to dinner. A while later, he complained of a severe sore throat. He was beginning to loose his voice when a medical staff was finally brought to him.
On December 14th, 1799, George Washington let out the last of his great and powerful breaths and prepared, without complaint, for his death. He lay on his bead and gave his last words to all that were important to him. His death was a difficult tragedy that our country had to overcome. Now, the real question comes into the picture: how did Washington really die?
Many physicians say that it was the fact that Washington was given the wrong treatments that killed him. The ailments that doctors used back then would be considered horribly wrong in our present time frame. One of these incorrect cures developed was ‘bleeding’ a patient to remove tainted blood. They thought that the patient would recover because the infection would leave the body through the blood. This is not an effective treatment because a sick patient can’t afford to loose blood. Loosing blood makes a patient weak, and decreases their chances for survival. Because Washington was bled, he could have become too weak to fight the illness on his own. Many drugs were offered to be administered, but were never given due to the rejections of the medical staff, and of Washington himself.
Another theory is that Washington had acute epiglottitis, which is the infection of the epiglottis. This will make it difficult to breath and to speak. Washington certainly had these symptoms as well as the sore throat that the disease caused as well. If this were the case, then he had a very low chance of coming out if it alive because of the fatal nature of the illness.
No one knows whether Washington died when he had to, or if he still had a couple of years left. Nothing of the past can be changed however, and now we can only learn from out mistakes. Washington knew he was going to die, and was ready for it. We will always remember him as a great man who united our nation.
